Subject: Injured hiker from rock fall at Fisher Towers.
Date: 3/13/19 11:39 AM
Today at approximately 11:40 Grand County EMS was dispatched to the Fisher Towers area for a report of a hiker that was hit by a boulder.
Limited information was available due to very poor cell coverage in the area. Upon arrival Grand County EMS paramedics and a Grand County Sheriff’s deputy hiked into the patient.
The party reported that a basketball size rock came loose from a cliff above and landed on the patient. Unknown exactly how far the rock fell.
The patient sustained serious/life threatening injuries. A critical care helicopter was requested and denied due to weather. GCEMS paged a 2nd ambulance and in total had 3 paramedics (1 of them being critical care), 2 AEMTs and 1 EMT on scene. Grand County SAR preformed a safe and swift evacuation of the patient over 3.5 hours.
The patient was transported by ground to St Marys Medical Center in Grand Junction in critical condition.
During this operation several other rock falls were observed by the rescuers. Please be very cautious if you plan to hike during the recent rainstorms.
